Restaurant Review: Downtown Bistro in Gulfport, Mississippi

Downtown Gulfport has a new bistro, and it’s a much-loved addition.

If you’re looking for a comfortable, casual spot for a great lunch or an evening drink, Downtown Bistro is the place for you. You’ll love the prohibition vibe with a jazzy, speakeasy feel. Be sure to check out the antique piano and old photos of movie stars on the walls. There are also comfy sofas and chairs arranged around the tables, making the space the perfect setting for socializing with friends.

Located just behind Half Shell Oyster House, the Downtown Bistro has a great selection of cigars for sale and tables out front if you want to try one. To accompany that fine cigar there is a great selection of bourbons and scotch and a full bar with a large menu of specialty cocktails. You’ll also enjoy the Sunday Jazz Brunch, special cigar and bourbon flights, and live entertainment on Saturday nights.

The menu is an interesting combination of New Orleans Cajun cuisine with a lot of creativity. I just loved the bacon, blackberry jam grilled cheese with house fries. I’m not sure I haven’t seen a more creative sandwich in years, and this was delicious. Another bestseller is the duck bites on the small plate menu. These are red wine marinated buckskin breasts with cream cheese, jalapenos and cheddar cheese wrapped in applewood smoked bacon, crisp fried and drizzled with a tangy sauce glaze. You might also want to try the hot brie and the black pudding and pepper egg rolls.

You also have a choice of four large plates: Cuban tacos (pork, shrimp, or chicken), a good Cuban sandwich, Cajun smoked sausage sliders, and the blackberry grilled cheese I mentioned before. There are also a few salads, a chicken avocado club wrap, a shrimp wrap and a charcuterie board.

There are only three desserts on the menu, but they are delicious, I don’t think there could be a better choice. I loved the fried sweet plantains with a Foster bourbon sauce, a dish I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else. There is also a limoncello mascarpone cake and a chocolate mousse cake.

It’s hard to think of a better fit for aging downtown Gulfport than the Downtown Bistro. It’s thoughtfully designed, has an exciting menu and is the perfect place for a quick lunch on a busy day, and a very cool place to relax in the evening. I think you will like everything about this place.
